MUT files two judicial protests against the Ministry for Education

The Malta Union of Teachers has filed two judicial protests against the Ministry for Education for its failure in granting the recognition to MUT of a number of employees. The judicial protests follow requests for recognition presented to the Ministry and the Directorate of Employment and Industrial Relations.

The first judicial protest involves the request for recognition of School Technician grades who are employed directly by the Ministry for Education. Despite registering the majority of members in this grade, the Ministry is failing to recognise the MUT as the sole union for collective representations.

The second judicial protest which was filed against the Ministry for Education and the Malta College of Arts, Science and Technology (MCAST) involves the grades of Senior Administrative Officers, Senior Library Assistants, Library Assistants, Junior IT officers and IT officers employed by MCAST. MCAST and the Ministry are failing to grant the recognition of these grades despite the majority of respective members who are registered with the MUT. The union shall be meeting affected members to discuss the way forward.

The judicial protests were filed by lawyers Dr Keith Borg and Dr Rebecca Mercieca who represent the MUT.
