MUT asks for change in quarantine rules after difficulties faced by parents with young children

The MUT wrote to the Principal Permanent Secretary, Mr Mario Cutajar, on the changes in quarantine implemented in the past days. These are creating considerable difficulties on educators who are parents of young children.

In its correspondence, the MUT stated that with the sustained daily high number of positive cases, there is a considerable number of students in mandatory quarantine whilst their parents are not since they are considered as secondary contacts. In the absence of leave provision for educator grades, educators are facing a problem in that they cannot leave their young children alone at home and go to their workplace while at the same time there is no provision which enables them to work from home.

The union has requested that in situations where there is a child in mandatory quarantine, one of the parents is granted quarantine leave to remain home. The MUT communicated with the Principal Permanent Secretary directly after it was told that this is a central issue that requires a central direction.
