Lack of Environmental Consciousness in new Milk, Fruit and Vegetable Scheme
Following considerable feedback from members, the MUT would like to share the disappointment of educators in relation to the new scheme involving the distribution of milk, fruit and vegetables in schools. Whilst praising the initiative, the main issue in this respect is the lack of environmental consciousness at a time when huge efforts are being made globally to reduce waste, in this case plastic straws and containers. The amount of waste to be generated by this scheme goes against all this effort, especially since the distribution itself is being done in schools and students have and will continue to receive a message contradicting the whole idea of waste reduction discussed during lessons. The Union is also at a loss why such outdated practices have been approved as part of an EU-Funded Project, which most certainly would include provisions on ways how to generate the least amount of waste possible as part of its policies.
The MUT appeals with the Government to look into ways to reduce all waste which is bound to be generated through this project, both for the sake of the environment and also to make sure not to contradict the good educational work being done in schools in this regard.
