Directive to Complementary Teachers on in class visits
The MUT wrote to the DG DES and DG DQSE after it received a number of complaints from complementary teachers that they received instructions from the Literacy Agency to perform duties which are not commensurate with their role. At the same time the Union received a number of complaints from class teachers who cannot perform their teaching duties properly when they have a complementary teacher trying to teach different levels in the same classroom.
In view of this, the Union asked for an urgent meeting with MEDE to clarify what the role of a complementary teacher is and should be. The Union also reminded the DGs that complementary teachers should be given instructions by their superiors and not by external agencies. Meanwhile the Union is directing complementary teachers to refrain from carrying out in class visits for the time being until an agreement on the way forward is reached and a respectable balance is found.
