MUT reviewing National Cultural Policy as is affects educational sector – objection registered on major change
The MUT communicated with the Ministry for Education regarding the National Cultural Policy 2021 currently being drafted. The union noted that this policy includes proposals which shall affect members in the educational sector represented by the MUT. Any changes would therefore need to be discussed and agreed upon with the union.
One proposal in particular has already been registered as an objection. This states that the Schools for Arts, Music and Drama, part of the Mikiel Anton Vassalli College, shall move from the Ministry for Education to the direct responsibility of the Ministry for Culture. The MUT stated that for the interest of members and students to be safeguarded, the educational sector needs to remain one and that if the MUT, in the past years, acceded to pressures from all sectors and different Ministries to have their ‘piece’ of education sector, today there would be a fragmented sector.
In conclusion, the union also noted that it would have expected that, given the proposals affecting educators, the MUT would be informed and involved in the process. Nonetheless the union is currently going through the draft policy text and shall be providing a detailed position accordingly.
