MATSEC to stop offering SEAC subjects: MUT declares a fresh trade dispute with the Education Ministry
A dispute between the MUT, Education Ministry and MATSEC has reached a new level now that the union is informed that MATSEC decided unilaterally to stop offering SEAC subjects. In its latest attempt to shift the blame, the MATSEC shall be claiming that it shall stop offering SEAC due to the directive of the MUT on video recording. What MATSEC shall not say is that it has been amongst those who opposed the introduction of SEAC subjects in the first place and its data indicate that the student uptake in comparison to the equivalent VET subjects does not justify having parallel subjects. This when students taking SEAC could have obtained the same grade when taking the VET equivalent. Meanwhile, also claiming the MUT directive as the cause, MATSEC decided to penalise students by limiting their assessment in VET subjects to bypass the directive. This tactic is not new to MATSEC and we have seen various instances when MATSEC ‘used’ students to get its way through. The MUT and its members shall not be intimidated and the union has declared a fresh trade dispute with the Education Ministry.
