Press Release: Request for inclusion of Junior College in new University Act accepted by the Ministry

Following feedback on the Consultation Paper issued by the Ministry for Education and Employment last year, the Malta Union of Teachers noted with disappointment the new proposals drawn up by the Ministry particularly the lack of reference to the Junior College. Even the reference at the end of the document in the consultation paper, stating that the Junior College structure is to be retained, had been removed.

During a consultation meeting held this afternoon, the Ministry claimed that there was no intention to remove the Junior college from the new University Act and accepted the proposal of the MUT to insert a revised version of the existing legal notice of 1995 regulating the Junior college in the new University Act. The MUT shall propose amendments so that the new law emphasises the role of the Junior College as a pre-tertiary institution and as an academic institution of excellence. The MUT once again stresses the point that the governing structures and status of the College should be considered institutionally.
