Issues at MCAST Institute for Creative Arts – directive on new units
The MUT wrote to the MCAST Principal after it was contacted by its representatives at the Institute for Creative Arts (ICA) with difficulties members are facing. The Union asked the MCAST Principal to look into these issues urgently with the view of solving them before the end of this semester. These include issues related to lack of Deputy Directors at this massive Institute (with over 900 students), where the Director is expected to singlehandedly solve and administer issues related maintenance, timetables, student issues, lecturer issues, and a million other things, and issues related to New Units at Levels 4 and 5/6. On the latter, the Union expects MCAST to put in place a system of proper guidance to lecturers to establish what needs to be taught and at what level, provide compensation for lecturers who are being forced to write units from scratch, and create a system of proper vetting. At this stage the MUT is directing all members at this institute to refrain from writing new units and to deliver units which have not been written before an agreement on a proper way forward on this issue is reached.
