World Teachers’ Day 2025

The Malta Union of Teachers is commemorating World Teachers Day 2025 with this year’s theme Recasting the Teaching Profession as a Collaborative Effort. This day is celebrated worldwide and is convened in partnership with UNESCO, ILO, UNICEF and Education International.

The collaborative aspect of this year’s theme is central to teaching and learning. Teamwork is celebrated in our profession and the teaching and learning process involves not only the classroom Teacher or Kindergarten Educator but also Learning Support Educators, Support and Peripatetic Teachers, Student Support Services personnel such as Counsellors and Career Advisors and other professionals. The family-school link is also central in schooling with frequent opportunities for the involvement of families and the participation of parents or guardians in the schools-running through the school councils.

Participation is not limited to the confines of the school building. Schools enter into partnerships with local councils and local parishes to provide support, formation and a wider holistic education to students immersed in the values, beliefs and traditions shared by the locality’s organisations. This enriches the schooling experience. Similarly, partnerships with local organisations like leisure and sports clubs through the sharing of facilities and expertise provides a wider educational perspective to students. The collaborative aspect is also manifested in project-work carried out in EU programmes with schools in other countries which often promote sharing of best practices.

This collaborative approach is often overlooked but is an essential element in the teaching and learning process. It requires a community to teach a child and this community spirit is present in all operations carried out in the sector.

The MUT thanks all educators for the extensive work carried out throughout the year.
