Learning Support Assistant Acquitted of All Charges in Appeal
The MUT would like to note with satisfaction that Karen Mercieca – the LSA unjustly accused of abuse related to a child with learning disabilities – has just been acquitted from all charges by the Court of Appeals. The Union thanks everyone involved, in particular the law courts, members of the press who showed their support, involved lawyers, the government and the Public Service Commission. The next step for the Union is to ask for the immediate reintegration into the service and to also ask for compensation for lost income over the last five years. As the MUT stated when the original sentence was published, it is hoped that this will be an opportunity for everyone to learn from this experience so as not to repeat itself to the detriment of other educators.
