Press Release: MUT inaugurates its new headquarters
The Malta Union of Teachers has today officially inaugurated its new premises in Triq il-Kbira San Ġużepp, Ħamrun. This is the sixth address for the MUT during its 100 years since its foundation in 1919. After utilising the Floriana Elementary (now Primary) School in its first decades, the MUT moved to several rented premises until settling in its Teachers’ Institute in Republic Street, Valletta in 1977. The new building inaugurated today in Ħamrun is the largest and most accessible headquarters for its members.
During the inauguration activity held this morning, the MUT President Mr. Marco Bonnici stated that “we are proud to deliver the best space for the Union to operate in and to be accessible for our members. This is a very special year for the Union, it being its 100th year anniversary, and we are consolidating our efforts for the years to come. I thank all officials, council members, delegates and members since the Union’s inception up to the current ones as they played a pivotal role in all the successes of the Union throughout all decades. We look forward to continue serving.”
The Minister fo
r Education and employment, Hon. Evarist Bartolo and H.E. Mons. Charles J. Scicluna, Archbishop of Malta, presided over the unveiling of the commemorative tablet and the opening of a permanent exhibition on the history of the Union based on its dual role, as trade-union and professional body. A separate temporary visual art exhibition was also inaugurated following a call for artists. This will be open to the public during office hours until the end of October. This activity is part of a series to commemorate the 100th year anniversary of the Malta Union of Teachers, which will be celebrated on Friday, 22nd November 2019.
