MUT Registers objections with the Planning Authority about the Victoria Gozo middle school plans

The MUT has registered its objections with the Planning Authority to the proposed demolition and extension of the Middle School in Victoria Gozo. This follows the news some weeks ago that rather than building a new school in Victoria, plans reveal a proposal to carry out an extension to the existing building of the Middle School in Victoria to house Childcare, Kindergarten and Primary school students. The Middle School in Victoria, which has been refurbished in the past years, has already limited outdoor space and facilities and has to use school facilities of the adjacent Secondary School. The proposed extensions will drastically reduce the outdoor space, which is required in any school, leading to insufficient facilities for the existing Middle School students and the proposed Childcare, Kindergarten and Primary School students. Apart from this, members informed the Union that a similar school building in Qala, by architect Huntingford, was not demolished as it is considered a landmark for the island.

Meanwhile the Union notes that this planning application is separate from the other one, related to the Ninu Cremona block, on which the MUT objected to on the same grounds. According to these plans, instead of using it as the site for the new Primary School, this Ninu Cremona block shall be converted to a museum and restaurant facilities. Apart from disappointment on the lack of consultation with educators on this matter, the MUT is appealing once again to the Government to rethink the proposal for the benefit of Students and Educators in both schools whist reaffirming that students and educators at the Primary school in Victoria cannot wait any longer to have the proposed new Primary school.
