No shame in protecting LSEs and Teachers at Helen Keller RC
With reference to the unwarranted comments by the Commission for the Rights of Persons with Disability (CRPD) about a directive issued by the MUT to members at Helen Keller Resource Centre regarding the use of the Jacuzzi, the Union is issuing the following clarification:
1. The directive is long-standing and is due to the poor facilities and resources of the Centre which do not safeguard the health and safety of educators and students;
2. The Union cannot accept that the said Jacuzzi, the size of a large bath tub, is used without taking all necessary Health and Safety precautions;
3. The Union cannot ignore the effect of the Jacuzzi service on other students who are not using the service. The Jacuzzi service results in less LSEs assigned with students in class causing Health and Safety risks to students;
4. The Union cannot accept that the water used, which in the past had failed essential tests, is still untreated. Jacuzzi water is drained to water plants, that is why the school has refrained from treating it with the necessary chemicals.
The Union is not ashamed to protect its members in issues pertaining to Health and Safety, which issues should be safeguarded by the same employer and should be the main concern of CRPD.
